my favorite books.

One of the books that i really enjoyed was Shaun Anderson’s book entitled “Samurai” his book showcased the Bboy life style in many different ways. His book was the only book that i saw that involved movement and thats what breakdancing is all about so i really appreciated that. Many of the pictures showed one of the best break dancers in the world named Wing. Wing has always been an inspiration to the break dance world and for him to be at the competition was a big deal. Although he was a little jet lagged he and didnt speak english, Shaun said that he was still down to earth. A lot of people in Shaun’s book were chasing their dream of break dancing and he really brought that out.

The second book i liked was Rosa’s book because it showed a lot of pics of Camp Pendelton. The pictures were well taken and documented daily life in the military base. This book also hit close to home because my dad was in the navy and was stationed almost everywhere in the world. So i really enjoyed the pictures in her book.

Fazal Sheikh

MOPA

Photography

November 25th, 2009

This specific exhibition was very interesting because it showed many problems that are constantly being faced in another

country. Beloved Daughters is a photography exhibition by Fazal Sheikh who photographed many of the problems going in

India right now. The main thing that was shocking at her exhibit was the amount of pictures she took of children. A lot of

things run through your mind when you think of that child like curiosity, but this exhibit was different. We’re use to seeing the

innocence of a child but just looking at the eyes of the pictures she has taken really reversed my outlook. The exhibition

showcased certain stories of the civil struggle of India and one of the stories that really got to me was about the amount of

human trafficking that still goes on over there. I saw a photograph of a girl named Kamla who was sold into trafficking by a

young woman to Ghaziabad. The photograph was just of her hands on her legs but it was still really powerful. During her

years of “slavery” she was tortured, broken in and had a pressure cooker pressed to her genitals. She was then transferred to

GB Road where she never saw the light of day. She now lives in a shelter in Deli. Many of the stories from Sheikh’s exhibit

were about poor income and children who were forced to work at a very young age to support their families. Many of the

children live in shantytowns or slums, but a lot of them live in squats. You can just see in their eyes that they are really

struggling there, and that is what got to me the most.

Ralph Lee Hopkins

San Diego History Museum: Ordover Galery

November 25th, 2009

Upon entering the San Diego History Museum it was really confusing because it has been a long time since I have been there.

I got to elevator and went up to the 4th floor of the museum. I didn’t realize how much photographs were actually in the exhibit

so I was really amazed. All of the photographs were very colorful and beautiful. I started to look at Ralph Lee Hopkin’s pieces

because they were the first to come to my attention right when I entered through the door. His photograph “Boojum Tree” was

very interesting because I have never seen a plant shaped the way it was shaped. The Tree grew out and was shaped in a wavy

S, and the plants behind it made the tree stand out. His other photograph that caught my eye was “Nesting Terns”. At first

sight It was hard to see what exactly the photo was but when you look closer it was just a whole photograph filled with these

birds that were flying around.  It was almost confusing. I also took a look at Jack Dakinga’s pieces and one of them really stood

out. It was called “Boojum Afterglow” and it was a beautiful picture with great warm colors of yellow, magenta, violet and blue.

Obviously it seems the cactus was the subject matter of the picture but they were only mere shadows to the beautiful colors in

the background, I was just focused on the back sky. I came to the realization that each photographer has their own type of

theme they went with their pieces. Hopkins was more botanical, Dakinga was more landscape and the beauty and Octavio

seemed like his photographs incorporated nature.

The cover.

These are a couple of pictures from my book about Japanese tattoos. My friends and i always have been obsessed with Japanese tattooing. The main reason why was because many of the pictures and symbols have more meaning than anything in the world. This book features tattoos from three of my friends. All of them with full or almost full sleeves on their bodies.

For the middle half of my book, i am going to put various pictures of my friend who does Cosplay.  Cosplay which is short for “Costume Roleplaying” is where someone would dress up as a specific character from pop culture. In this case i am going to be taking pictures of my friend who is heavily into japanse animation. She dresses up and has many costumes of various characters.

For the next section, im going to be taking pictures of various food from asian cultures. I know how to make a couple of Korean Dishes, I will take pictures of Filipino Food made at home, and i will take pictures of sushi.

For the end i will be scanning and putting up pictures of where i lived. I have a lot of picrtures from when i lived in Korea, so i will scan all the documents ive saved.

James Nachtwey

There are a lot of photographic journalists in the world, some of whom i dont know of, but today in class learned about a photographer who covered many of the problems faced in the world today. James Nachtwey covered afghanistan, aids in africa, Indonesia, and many civil war conflicts. His pictures are quite brilliant and absolutely striking. Unlike other photographers, Nachtwey’s pictures are very emotional and you could just feel what the subject must have been going through. Pictures that have a lot of emotion tend to inspire, and i believe that Nachtwey’s pictures probably inspired a lot of people. Just the tone of his voice you would think that this guy cares about the problems in the world. There are not that many people in the world and it is refreshing that there are still people who are willing to expose the truth. The world is a scary place where millions of people suffer.JN0004INDO_GA_40-28
